New Spin on Classic Flavor with Unoaked Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the world’s most popular white wine due to its versatility and ability to please many palates. You can find some Chardonnays today lightly oaked or with no oak at all. Unoaked Chardonnay has little residual sugar, and fills the palate with a dry, balanced flavor. Aged in stainless steel barrels versus oak barrels, this innovative spin on chardonnay can be refreshing and even the most inexperienced wine drinker may enjoy it. The stainless steel barrel gives the Chardonnay a light body similar to varietals such as Riesling, American Pinot Gris (Grigio) and Chenin Blanc.

My recommendation for unoaked Chardonnay is Mer Soleil’s Silver Chardonnay. This wine is produced in the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, California, and retails for $17.99-$19.99/
750ml. With a vibrant acidity that matches its fruits, this unoaked Chardonnay is perfect for any occasion. Citrus fruits, pear, honeysuckle, and aromas of flower blossom create for a well-balanced 2016 vintage wine. The flavor of the wine mocks the original, however the stainless steel barrels and small concrete tanks imported from Burgundy, France, provide the wine with a more pure and clean taste than classic Chardonnay.
